The SFO is delighted to welcome back Andrew McGarva to conduct their annual Usher Hall Hogmanay celebration.
When the orchestra’s Director of Music, Blair Parham MBE, was unavailable to conduct this year, the orchestra reached out to Andrew who was honoured to return to the same stage where he first conducted the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra in October 1992.
This performance marks a homecoming in every sense, rekindling a partnership with the Orchestra that has spanned more than 30 years and taken him to concert halls across the UK as well as on memorable tours of Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
In 2007 Andrew left Scotland to work at the British School in Tokyo and, while in Japan, he conducted the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra for a major UK–Japan cultural celebration.
He was also honoured to sing the Scottish National Anthem at the Scotland–Japan football international, performing live to a crowd of 64,000 in the Japanese World Cup Stadium.
A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Andrew has played as a fiddler with Coila, composed published works and performed widely as a violinist and conductor.
Andrew also presents Scottish Sundays on Heartland FM, sharing traditional and contemporary Scottish music with listeners.
Alongside his musical career, Andrew is Rector of Morrison’s Academy, an independent school for pupils aged 2–18 in Crieff.
